Case Overview:

The patient was a 19 year old and was diagnosed with tuberous sclerosis complex at a young age of 9 months. Over her lifetime the patient experienced worsening seizures, unfortunately without significant seizure control. The defendant performed a surgical resection of what was suspected to be her primary tuber, responsible for the majority of her seizures. During the left frontal craniotomy, intraoperative electrocardiography demonstrated abnormalities in the tissue surrounding the tuber being resected, which confirmed the preoperative suspicion. The surgery was completed uneventfully and without complications. Post-operatively, the patient had significant improvement in both the number and the severity of her seizures, although she did develop transient weakness that was slow to resolve. The jury found in favor of the defense.
